Your first step after a positive test
When you find out you're pregnant — especially for the first time — the questions start almost immediately. What do I need to do now? Who do I see first? What tests will I need? The prenatal visit is where we start answering those questions together, before the regular antenatal schedule begins.

What happens at your first visit
The first prenatal appointment is longer than a routine visit. Your doctor will take a full history — your general health, any previous pregnancies, any conditions that run in your family — because some of those things affect how your pregnancy will be managed. A physical examination follows, and we calculate your estimated due date.
Blood tests are an important part of this first visit. We check for anaemia, blood group and rhesus factor, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and blood sugar. These aren't alarming tests — they're the standard Uganda PMTCT and antenatal screening panel, and they allow us to start the right care early if anything needs attention.
We'll also start you on folic acid and iron supplementation if you haven't already, discuss what to eat, what to avoid, and set up your antenatal visit schedule for the rest of the pregnancy.
